Instructor Mid Ers

Pair of Training Shoes
1991 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

In this design for sports footwear, Reebok combines ornament and function. As high-status objects intended for female aerobics instructors, the shoes have soles designed to be seen during the activity of the wearer, showing the decorative pattern of the treads, air tubes of the 'Energy Return System' and the company's trademark. The ankle is defined and accentuated by a wavy ornamental line, while the ventilation holes are concealed by an almost architectural arched motif. These Reebok footwear designs exemplify the growing trend, begun in the 1980s, for highly specialised fitness clothing. They are also representative of the rise - and eventual fall - in popularity of the aerobics workout.
