This engraving by Jacques de Gheyn II shows Neptune, the mythological god who ruled the sea and all sea-creatures. He is identifiable by the trident, or three-pronged staff he carries. He is shown surrounded by tritons (mermen), nereids (sea-nymphs) and hippocamps (seahorses), as well as cupids, a popular motif in Renaissance art. Neptune also represents one of the four elements, Water.
