Painting of Ellen Terry in the role of Lady Macbeth by the artist John Singer Sargent. She is wearing the famous beetlewing dress with its flowing sleeves and rich velvet cloak.
This dress (designed by Alice Comyns Carr and made by Mrs.Nettleship) is one of Terry's most famous costumes. Made from crocheted bohemian yarn and trimmed with real green bettlewings, it was worn with a wig of long auburn plaits twisted with gold and a rich crimson velvet cloak with gold applique.
