Object history | Ram and goat heads are often found in classical ornament, because these animals were sacrificed to the Greek and Roman gods: they are known as aegricanes. Sometimes the skull of a ram or goat, or an ox, is used, when it becomes a bucranium. This is a cast from a stone pilaster capital of about 1570 in the Palace of the Tuileries in Paris. Philibert de l'Orme (about 1510-70) started building the palace for Catherine de Medici in 1564; after his death work continued under the supervision of Jean Bullant (about 1520-78) |
