Place of origin |
The chimney-piece seen here was designed by Jean Barbet and is from the set Livre d’Architecture d’Autels et de Chiminèes, first published in 1632. The chimney-piece is extremely elaborate, and it uses a number of motifs such as putti, flower and fruit ornaments, human figures as architectural features and decoration inspired by plant forms. It is in the Mannerist style, which was seen as contrived and decadent, and was a reaction against the harmonious symmetry of Classicism. Barbet’s prints influenced many architects in England including Inigo Jones.
