This engraving by Enea Vico shows a vase in a style inspired by Roman antiques. From 1530 onwards Roman printmakers published sets of engravings of antique vases, which were extensively copied outside Italy. While these prints are lettered ‘At Rome, obtained from the antique’, in fact the vases have been somewhat ‘restored’ by Vico, with distinctly contemporary handles and other additions.
Ornament prints such as these were intended for the use of designers and craftsmen, and were responsible for spreading decorative styles.
