Italian architects of the 1500s had the idea of topping off the sheer outside walls of their palazzi with prominent projecting cornices. Some of the cornices shown here are based on the Corinthian, Composite and Doric orders. Others are new types devised by Michelangelo (Palazzo Farnese) and Vignola.
