It is difficult to determine precisely how the present drawing relates to the Dartmouth view of the same site [. . . ], which is of approximately the same size. I suspect that Wilson initially meant this sheet to serve as part of the Dartmouth set, before realising that his viewpoint was too close to permit the achievement of a satisfactory classical composition. Neglecting to enhance his linear sketch with much in the way of chiaroscuro modelling, he may simply have abandoned it in mid-stream, choosing instead to start over again further away from the town.'
