June Crisfield Chapman is a renowned printmaker specialising in wood engraving, a medium in which she has developed a strong individual style well-adapted to her subject matter which includes book and magazine illustration - particularly botanical and natural history subjects, folklore and myth, and theatrical scenes and characters. Chapman's work is characterised by strong and fluent lines, not easily achieved when working with the resistant grain of a wood block.
The Pasque Flower is one of a series of botanical images which she produced to illustrate articles in 'The Countryman' magazine. It demonstrates the artist's skill in working within the confines of a small block without compromising the lively confident character of her design.
