The clothes and ornaments worn by Tibetan noblemen prior to 1959 indicated rank and level within the government. This type of hat was worn specifically for riding in the summer, there being a summer and a winter costume. The stone at the top of the finial indicates the wearer had the lowest or seventh rank from the seven levels of government official.

Nobleman's summer riding hat, woven brocade, repousee silver, c.1900-1950, Lhasa
Physical description
A circular summer riding hat for a nobleman with a wide brim trimmed with Chinese brocade at its edge and with "cloud collar" of brocade. A silver finial at the centre is made in the shape of a bumpa or treasure vase at the top of which is a piece of polished turquoise.
