Inscribed at lower right, in brown ink (with the museum’s Dyce inv. no.), 502. Inscribed on washed mount, in pencil: Unnamed; and in a nineteenth-century hand (with the original Dyce inv. no.), 259.
Gallery label
With its dense group of elaborately posed figures, this drawing demonstrates an intricate style inspired by Italian Renaissance ideals. The style spread throughout the Netherlands in the 16th century. Lambert Lombard was an important early art theorist and leading member of a group known as ‘Romanists’ – Netherlandish artists who studied antique art in Rome.
