Physical description
Engraving depicting the painted ceiling over the pit of Goodman's Fields Theatre, London, 1820. It features a central oval painting showing a rural landscape, a group of figures in classically inspired robes at its centre. The painting is enclosed within a rectangular frame, filled with geometric and scrolling motifs, and with four further circular portraits showing the playwrights 'Betterton', 'Dryden', 'Shakespear [sic]' and 'Congrave'.

Marks and inscriptions
'From the Original Drawing in the British Museum, made by William Capon in 1786. This Theatre was built by Henry Giffard in 1737 under the direction of Shepherd (who built Covent Garden Theatre) the length from East to West, 88 feet, and in breadth, 48 1/2 - The Width of the Pit, 30 feet - The depth of the Orchestra, 15 feet - The Boxes a light flesh or pink colour. The Scenes of the Royalty during the building of that Theatre in 1786 were painted here.' (Bottom centre)
