Object history
Historical significance: Presented by Queen Victoria to the composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) in 1871. Gounod had taken refuge in Britain from the Franco-Prussian war. He played and sang for Queen Victoria at Osborne House on the 18th March 1871. On the 1st May he conducted the first performance of his elegy 'Gallia' at the Albert Hall to mark the opening of the International Exhibition.
