Kipper Williams (b.1951) regularly draws a 'pocket cartoon' on a topical issue for the Guardian newspaper. This cartoon of the V&A shop accompanied the article 'Museum stores booming as cultural shoppers seek out "gifts with soul"', published on 18 August 2009. Showing a visitor carefully examining a colourful display of merchandise, while one of the sales assistants explains to the other: 'She's a specialist in early 21st century placemats', it targets the increasingly central role played by the shop in today's museums.
