This wristlet is part of a ritual costume worn formerly in Tibet by wandering lamas (priests) of the Nyingmapa or 'Old Order' of Tibetan Buddhism during exorcisms. Such costumes were also worn by members of other orders during exorcistic monastic dances. During such occasions, and especially at the Tibetan New Year (February- March), negative spiritual forces were expelled from the locality. They were also worn during fire offering ceremonies and by Tantric masters at initiations.
