Place of origin |
This image of 'a connoisseur - obviously of the female form and not fine art - satirises the sale of plaster casts of Madam Vestris's leg in Mr. Brogeotti's shop in Russell Street, Covent Garden, which resulted in the 1831 trial of Thomas Papera who was charged with stealing a plaster cast of Madame Vestris's legs from his cousin 'the celebrated Italian modeller' James Papera. James Papera claimed his cousin had stolen the mould to make more casts, to satisfy public demand, but that unauthorised versions had to have been made from come from his cast because he was the only modeller for whom Vestris had stood to have a cast made. Thomas Papera was found not guilty and it was reported that some of the jurors expressed dissatisfaction that the leg of the lady was not produced in court.
