Place of origin |
The view is on the outskirts of a fortified town. On the left three empty rowing boats are moored along the canal, just below the city walls. At centre, in front of a stone church tower and arched bridge, under which a man rows a boat, is a derrick. A tall church spire rises above the bridge, and on the right two figures stand at the city gate.

Gallery label | This river-view, enlivened with small details, is typical of van de Velde I’s style. A boat passes under a bridge towards the centre of the drawing, leading the eye to the Church of St Nicolaaskerk in the distance. Esaias van de Velde was the most pioneering and influential member of a group of early 17th-century artists who introduced greater naturalism into views of their native Dutch landscape. |
