Labels and date

This river-view, enlivened with small details, is typical of van de Velde I’s style. A boat passes under a bridge towards the centre of the drawing, leading the eye to the Church of St Nicolaaskerk in the distance. Esaias van de Velde was the most pioneering and influential member of a group of early 17th-century artists who introduced greater naturalism into views of their native Dutch landscape. []
