LANFRANCO, GIOVANNI (1582-1647) 735 Study of a woman's head in profile, with up-turned eyes Inscribed in ink in an old hand 'Guido' Black chalk heightened with white on grey paper 11 1/8 x 7 7/8 (283 x 199) Dyce 327 PROVENANCE Dyce Bequest 1869 LITERATURE Dyce Catalogue no. 327 (as anonymous 'ascribed to Guido Reni') The old attribution to Reni is not convincing. The drawing is reminiscent of Lanfranco. The head of the Virgin in his painting of the Annunciation in the Hermitage, Leningrad, is similar, though younger and more feminine. See Erich Schleier on Lanfranco in The Burlington Magazine 104, 1962, p. 252, fig. 24).
