  • Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings Volume II. 17th-18th century, London: Her Majesty's Stationary Office, 1980, pp. 196-197. The text is as follows: SCHOOL UNKNOWN: mid 18th century 1265 Head and shoulders of a youth or young woman holding a book Inscribed in ink ‘Parmigiano’ on a slip of paper pasted on to the mount; and on the mount itself in pencil ‘from Lord Spencer’s collection’ Black chalk touches with red and yellow chalks 7 ¼ x 6 ¼ (183 x 158) Dyce 286 PROVENANCE Lord Spencer (lugt 1530); Dyce Bequest 1869 LITERATURE Dyce Collection no. 286 (as ‘anonymous, ascribed to Parmigiano…said to be the artist’s portrait’) The sfumato effect which the artist evidently intended to obtain by stumping had been increased by wear, and the drawing is in a state which makes it difficult to judge it. The costume and the pose are characteristic of the 16th century. The drawing may be a record made by a later artist of a cinquecento painting or drawing, or it may be a deliberate imitation.
