  • Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings Volume I. 14th-16th century, London: Her Majesty's Stationary Office, 1979, p. 160. The text is as follows: TINTORETTO, JACOPO Jacopo Robusti (1518-94) 337 Male nude, front view, bending to one side and looking down Inscribed in ink ‘G. Tintoretto’ (in the same hand as in no. 238) Black chalk on buff paper; squared in black chalk 11 5/8 x 4 ½ (296 x 139) Dyce 247 PROVENANCE Sir J. Reynolds (Lugt 2364); Dyce Bequest 1869 LITERATURE Dyce Catalogue no. 247 (as by Tintoretto); Tietze nad Tietze-Conrat, no. 1705 (also by Tintoretto) Possibly a study for the young woman admiring the infant Christ on the right side of the Adoration of the Shepherds formerly at Belluno in the Casa Pagani Varola (Bercken, pl. 200; a date in the 1580s in suggested). The head, neck and shoulders correspond fairly closely with the picture. But the woman’s arms in the picture are crossed on her breast, whereas in the drawing they appear to holding something away from the body. The position of the legs is different also, the left leg in the painting being advanced across the right one, so that the lower part of the woman’s body is twisted round to her right, instead of being shown frontally. This improves the pose, and may show a change of mind on the artist’s part.
