Berenson writes of 'this splendid but unfortunately blackened drawing' that 'here Benozzo displays all his charm and attains to a spirit and freedom of touch which places him as a draughtsman somewhere close to Carpaccio'. The oxidised whites have since been restored and the drawing is no longer blackened. A seated youth, seen from behind, similar to the one on the recto is shown in a drawing in the Uffizi (no. 235E) ascribed by Berenson to 'Alunno di Benozzo' (BB, 1938 and 1961, no. 1868A).
