  • Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings Volume I. 14th-16th century, London: Her Majesty's Stationary Office, 1979, p. 225. The text is as follows: SIENA: late 16th century 502 Head of a bearded man Inscribed on the back in red chalk ‘A. Gentelischi’, with another word, too faint to be read; on the mount an inscription in pencil giving an account of the life of Orazio Gentileschi in Dutch Red chalk 11 ¾ x 8 5/8 (299 x 219) Dyce 171 PROVEANCE J. Pz. Zoomer (Lugt 1511); Dyce Bequest 1869 LITERATURE Dyce Catalogue no. 171 (as by Orazio Gentileschi) The attribution to Orazio Gentileschi has been kept till lately, though the old inscription, on which the attribution is presumably based, gives the artist’s initial as A, evidently referring to Artemisis rather than Orazio. It seems unlikely tha the drawing is by wither artist. It look earlier in date and there are signs of Barocci’s influence in it.
