Giovangualberto/Virtu Speranza/com passato e presente’ Inscribed also in the bottom right-hand corner ‘Primo’ Pen and ink 15 7/8 x 9 7/8 (403 x 257) Dyce 167 Verso Rough sketches of a woman’s bust etc in an Enlgish 18th century hand PROVENANCE Dyce Bequest 1869 LITERATURE Dyce Catalogue no. 167 (as by Vasari) Copied from a segment of the some of Florence Cathedral or from a design by Vasari. It corresponds with the fresco above the tribune. The painting was begun by Vasari in 1572, and was interrupted by his death in 1574. Federico Zuccaro completed it between 1576 and 1579. The drawing is not characteristic os either artis, nor is the handwriting in the inscriptions. The drawing was probably copied or compiled from designs and notes in Vasari’s studio by a pupil. Teo phrases which occur in the inscription, viz. ‘Chiesa Trionfante (che) si riveste’ and ‘Dolore, Morte, Infermita’, are taken verbatim from a memorandum on the project which Vasari sumitted to Prince Francesco, the Grand Duke Cosimo’s son (published by C. Guasi, La Cupola di S. Maria del Fiore, Florence, 1857, p. 141)
