Place of origin

This is a three dimensional promotional stand advertising the soundtrack of the film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. The back section is an enlarged reproduction of the inside cover, featuring stills from the film, and was Reid's favourite design of his for the Sex Pistols. The soundtrack itself was released a year before the film, and hence many of these images were seen for the first time on its release. It also features stills from sequences that were later removed from the film, including images from an animated Sid Vicious segment.

One part of the front section, S.787A-1990, is a fluorescent-coloured cut-out highlighting the main individuals focussed on in the film, including 'Great Train Robber' Ronnie Biggs, band manager and svengali figure Malcolm McLaren and the band themselves. The second part (S.787B-1990) is a pop-out title for the album.

Jamie Reid's cut-and-paste aesthetic developed from his interest in radical politics. His artistic style developed while at art college in Croydon, where he was influenced by the ideas of the avant-garde political group, the Situationist International. The political slant to his art was aroused by the May 1968 Paris student riots, which inspired fraternal protests organised by Reid at the Croydon College of Art. These were directed with fellow student Malcolm McLaren, who would later become the manager of the Sex Pistols.
