Action Man was originally produced and sold in the United Kingdom and Australia by Palitoy Ltd from 1966 until 1984. Action Man was relaunched in 1993 by Hasbro, which is the era that this particular Action Man object falls under.

Action figures are particularly popular with boys because they represent traditional masculine traits and are closely associated with the public sphere which is represented by items such as tools, transportation, garages, machines, and military equipment. The underwater mission accessories for Action Man presents the toy as a doll because the doll's clothes can be changed. With action figures, clothes and hair are often painted on.

Physical description
Packaged Action Man accessories. The package contains a black plastic belt, green twin firing air tanks, a plastic screen and a weapon. These are contained in an acrylic pocket which is attached to some orange printed card. The words ‘Action Man’ are printed boldly in black along the top left, whilst ‘underwater mission’ is printed slightly smaller underneath. The back of the box shows images of the doll wearing the accessories.
