The embroidery on this sari is a type of whitework known as chikan work (from Persian chikankari). It probably originated in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) and migrated to Lucknow in the 18th century. It became popular for garments in Lucknow’s courtly nawabi society, and is still produced there today. Here it is combined with contrasting details in undyed tasar silk.
