Cast iron; designed by Louis Henry Sullivan (1856-1924)
Like the window grating shown nearby, this panel is a reinterpretation rather than a straight revival of the Gothic style (see also case 39). The architectural style is overlaid with stylised naturalistic ornament of a kind described by the designer as "organic". It was designed for the Carson, Pirie Scott & Co. building in Chicago. Another piece of ironwork designed by Sullivan around the same date in a completely different "organic" style can also be seen in this room.(1992) |
