The Millennium Dome, London 29/12/97

Photograph
1997 (photographed), 2000 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The Millennium Dome was built in Greenwich, London, to mark the turn of the third millennium and is the biggest dome in the world. Mark Power gained privileged access to the dome throughout the period of its construction, documenting the interior and exterior to produce a valuable record of the building, published in his book Superstructure (2000). Here he shows the dome’s high-tension wires before they were pulled taut to suspend the roof. Against the night sky the web of lines appear like a skeletal drawing of the structure, an almost invisible design sketched in the air.
