Object history | These samples are taken from a collection assembled by a Macclesfield silk designer. All of them show the hook-shaped both or paisley motif. Its origins are obscure, but it is found throughout the East, and is especially associated with India. In the mid-nineteenth century it became a popular pattern for European fabrics, especially shawls. The name derives from the wool-weaving town of Paisley in Scotland, where many shawls were produced. |
