In this moonlit river scene two long-legged birds stand, calm and serene, gazing across the water. The artist, Henry Stacey Marks (1829-1898), built his reputation largely on his watercolour paintings of all types of birdlife, from cockatoos to penguins. In his later career, Marks developed a fascination for painting long-legged birds, such as the ones shown here.
