Broad Street, Oxford, by Moonlight

Watercolour
late 18th century (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This atmospheric watercolour shows a moonlit scene of Broad Street, Oxford, with two shadowy figures on the right-hand side. This atmospheric haziness is characteristic of many of the pictures painted by John Baptist Malchair (1731-1812). He created the effect by putting a grey or pastel watercolour wash over blurred pencil lines.

Malchair only exhibited only one work during his lifetime but was a well- respected drawing master.
