This work shows the striking effects that can be achieved by pastel on rough paper, especially in the creation of a velvet shadowy darkness . The illuminating glow from the 'Sugg' gas lamp demonstrates the revealing intensity of artificial lighting. The Hollywood Arms is a public house which is still standing in Fulham, London.

Physical description
Pastel drawing depicting the frontage of a pub and figures illuminated beneath the light of a 'Sugg' gas lamp. The pub is situated on Hollywood Road off Fulham Road in West Brompton. The pastel has possibly been mixed with water.
Painting currently in a hessian covered frame.
