This watercolour is part of a series of paintings of witches at night. The artist, Richard Doyle, specialised in images of fairies and ghosts. In 1875 he made a trip to Canna, a small island on the west coast of Scotland. He was inspired by the stark landscape and the rocky coast and painted the series of which this picture is part.
