Nocturnal landscape

Watercolour
ca. 1946 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This abstract depiction of the night is by the British artist Prunella Clough (1919-1999). It demonstrates her preoccupation with what she called ‘urbscapes’ - the stark urban wastelands of post-war Britain. The geometric star adds to the desolation of the dark landscape.

Clough produced these paintings in her studio, using written notes and sometimes thumbnail sketches. She often used a palette of muted blue and severe charcoal grey to reflect what she saw as the colours of the English weather and light.
