Place of origin |
This photograph shows a half-timbered medieval building in Worcestershire. The site must once have been of importance, since it was surrounded by a defensive moat, visible to the right of the raised entrance roadway. This ancient building, which seems to grow out of its surrounding terrain, was a typical subject for Benjamin Brecknell Turner. Emulating the generation of watercolour painters before him, he sought out old buildings and quiet landscapes across England that were full of ‘picturesque’ possibilities – rich textures and contrasting tones, often at historical locations in a state of decay.
