Object history
Skirt dancing was a popular form of stage entertainment for several decades. It was originated by the music hall performer Kate Vaughan in the 1870s, and became a craze. It was a mixture of ballet steps and acrobatic movements, and the dancers wore long full-skirted dresses which they could also manipulate to give decorative effects such as wings, or flames.
