Object history
Presented to David Garrick by the Duke of Parma in 1764. The nominal file on the bequest of Mrs.Wihelmine (sic) Caroline Garrick includes a letter from her solicitor in which he identifies her as the widow of Nathan David Garrick, 'a Great Great Nephew of the celebrated David Garrick'. It describes 'the Gold Snuff Box presented by the Duke of Parma to David Garrick on the occasion of his dining with the Duke of Parma in company with the late Duke of York Lord Spencer and the first Minister in May 1764 - It is described in the Will as a gorgeous Snuff Box with six compartments of Paintings by Teniers enamelled upon Gold and as having been bequeathed by the Relict of David Garrick to the late Nathan Egerton Garrick who bequeathed the same to his eldest son the Testatrix's late husband Nathan David Garrick and is bequeathed...in compliance with his wishes to that effect to the South Kensington Museum'.
