The front petal opens to reveal the dial. Dial engraved with tulips and other flowers. Roman hour numerals, fleurs-de-lis at the half hours. Steel hand with tail. Oval brass movement plates. Square engraved pillars of baluster form, brass wheels. Fusee cut for a gut line, but the line missing. Verge escapement, brass balance wheel, pierced single-foot cock. Brass ratchet wheel for mainspring set-up.

Object history | The watch was on loan from the Dunn Gardner Collection from 23 July 1871 to 10 December 1901. It was bought by Mr S. J. Phillips at Christie's, 29 April 1902, in the Dunn Gardner sale, lot 4, for £51 pounds. It was acquired from him for £53. 11s., including 5% commission. Watches with similar cases have movements by Richard Crayle (Sotheby's, New York, 13 October 2004, lot 514), Simon Hackett (Sotheby's, 27 May 1954, lot 24), and John Drake (Sotheby's, 15 December 2015, lot 17). |
