Alfred Thomas Elwes was born ca.1842 in Leghorn, Tuscany, Italy. He married Kate Barnard on 15 October 1873 in Gravesend, Kent and died some time after 1901. He was a natural history artist.

Physical Description
Watercolour drawing on paper by Alfred Thomas Elwes. Features a boy standing in front of an easel holding a canvas. He paints a dog which poses on top of a chest. A cat, palette and brushes in the foreground. The illustration is movable: a hole has been cut out of the canvas painting and the head of the dog on the chest. Attached to the back of the sheet is a circular piece of paper which features dog heads with different facial expressions; when the circular sheet is moved round, the dog heads fit into place on the front of the illustration.
