Object history
While scrolling line ornament had appeared all over the Mediterranean in early times, it was the Greeks who developed it into freely spreading patterns. Linked to palmettes and then acanthus leaves, they became universally useful imaginary plant (see case 18). This cup, which recalls the work of painter called Psiax, is inscribed in Greek: 'Braxas is beautiful'.
