This carefully crafted miniature mahogany piano has a handwritten label glued to the base of the piano which reads: 'Made by Mr A Trethewey in 1912, a present for his wife to be.' Mr Trethewey's wife to be, Edith Maud (née Palmer) was 25 years old when the piano was made for her and 94 when she donated it to the museum.

Physical description | Miniature upright piano made of polished mahogany with hinged lid at the top and covering the keyboard. The black keys are black painted wood, the rest are individual pieces of cream celluloid. Some keys are chipped. The keyboard cover and hinged lid each have two brass hinges. The keyboard cover slots into place and is held by the piano front which has two metal pegs at the bottom. The front is held at the top by the piano lid. The bottom front also slots into place and should be held by two wooden tongues though one is missing. There are two wooden pedals screwed to the base. The rest of the construction is held by screws. The back is covered with a panel of linen which has faded on the outside from dark blue to grey. Behind the keyboard is a narrow strip of green baize. |
