Brief description
Pomander, silver-gilt filigree, 1650-1700, possibly Chinese work in South East Asia, or Dutch, imitating Chinese work.
Physical description
Pomander in two halves, silver filigree, gilded inside and out.
Dimensions
  • Across centre diameter: 3cm
  • Height: 4cm (Note: Base of pomander to top of knop, approximate. Does not include suspension loop.)
  • Across suspension loop. diameter: 1cm
Marks and inscriptions
  • Western European marks on the suspension loop, on knop and on lip of upper part of pomander. On suspension loop: traces of a rectangular mark, probably a Dutch import mark, a wolf's head. Knop: Dutch mark, a wolf's head, valid from 1814-1953 to indicate foreign silver; French 'weevil' mark stamped twice, valid for period 1835-1864, to indicate imported foreign silver. Rim of pomander: French 'weevil' mark, valid for period 1835-1864, to indicate imported foreign silver. Lower section of pomander unmarked.
  • Dutch mark used from 1814-1953
