Place of origin |
This bronze commemorative medal depicts the numismatist Sir Edward Stanley Gotch Robinson (1887-1976), and commemorates his working life in the department of coins and medals at the British Museum where he was from 1912 until his retirement as Keeper of the department in 1952. Robinson was a great authority on Greek coinage, and combined his career at the British Museum with a teaching post at Oxford University. It is appropriate that the V&A holds a medal celebrating the life and work of Robinson, as this museum, like the British Museum, has an important collection of commemorative medals.
The medal is made by Paul Vincze (1907-1994), a Hungarian-born medallist who took British citizenship in 1948 and lived and worked in London from then until his death. Vincze received wide and varied commissions and found a position in the mainstream of British medallic art.
