Hat

1920-1929 (made)

Cloche hat made of wool and crin. Crin would have been used to strengthen the hat and help sustain its shape. It was made by knitting a long strip of wool and crin together, which is then coiled round and round and sewn together. The piece would then have been machine blocked to create the distinctive bell-shaped crown. There is no lining. It has a narrow upturned brim and the hat is trimmed with a bow and hatband, made from a plain, blue, peterham ribbon.
