Gallery label | This shows the front-elevation of a fighter representing a Spitfire, and is one of two designs we acquired this year, the other being for a bomber. Barnes Wallis, the government scientist and inventor of the 'Dam Buster' bomb, apparently asked Monnington to carry out these drawings when they met at the Vickers Aeroplane works, then situated at the Brooklands race track where Monnington was working on camouflage. |
Object history | This design is an improvement on the Spitfire fighter plane carried out by Monnington on the wishes of Barnes Wallis. |
Production | Attribution note: This drawing is an improvement on the Spitfire fighter plane carried out by Monington on the request of Barnes Wallis. |
