Set of six hand-knitted dolls of various design:

A guardsman, knitted and padded, designed with a black bearskin and shoes, red jacket with blue trim, yellow buttons, white belt and blue trousers.

A pirate, knitted and padded, designed with a pirate's bicorne hat, red and grey scarf, striped jumper, black belt , red and grey trousers, black shoes. The arms are attached at the shoulders and the legs stitched together.

A clown, knitted and padded, designed with a green hat with a pink band and blue, yellow and green flowers; a yellow bow tie; blue, orange and green striped jumper; pink braces; yellow trousers with blue patches on the knees, and green shoes with pink bows.

A Brownie, knitted and padded, designed with a brown hat, brown dress with two pockets at the bottom, a yellow necktie, a brown badge with a yellow figure, brown belt and brown socks and shoes. The legs are sewn together.

A doll, knitted and padded, designed with a red bonnet and cape, green dress with a green waistband and cuffs, lavendar trousers and brown feet.

Davy Crockett, knitted and padded, designed with a brown hat with a striped tassel representing a raccoon's tail, beige jacket with fringing on the sleeves and around the bottom edge, brown belt, beige trousers and brown shoes. The arms are sewn on, the legs sewn together.

Object history
The toys were all made by Miss Butterfield for a bazaar at St. Andrew's church, Earlsfield, London. They were acquired by the Museum in 1982, purchased from Mrs Ann Golzen.
Historical context
Jean Greenhowe began her career in the 1960s designing fashion garments for Vogue Knitting. In 1967 she joined Woman’s Weekly magazine as their craft features writer and designer. Jean remained with the magazine for twenty-four years, producing hundreds of designs in a wide variety of crafts.

During these years Jean also wrote nineteen craft books, including the best-seller Knitted Toys.

In 1988 she established her own company Jean Greenhowe Designs, which went on to become one of the most successful publishers of knitting patterns in the world. Jean Greenhowe retired in 2017 at the age of eighty-three.

These toys were produced from designs by Jean Greenhowe, published in Woman's Weekly magazine in the early 1980s.
