Spoon, Silver-gilt, inset with an animal tooth and engraved. The decoration on this one is rich in religious symbolism, including the instruments of the Passion on the stem and the figures of St Anne, the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ on the bowl.

Object history note

Silver spoons were still highly prized possessions at this date…..or wood being more common. The decoration on this one is rich in religious symbolism, including the instruments of the Passion on the stem and the figures of St Anne, the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ on the bowl. All were probably favourite or patron saints of the owner. She was very possibly a woman. The tooth is probably intended to be a charm against disease and misfortune.
