Object history
This pot was made when simple field patterns of dots or squares were being used to challenge older figurative or floral patterns. The result is startlingly modern.

The simple dotted pattern here is similar to that found on contemporary wallpaper and textiles, and was one of many new types of field ornament that emerged in the age of neo-classicism.

Flowerpot and stand, English, late 18th century. Black basalt stoneware, decorated in white. Made by the Wedgwood factory.
