This spinning wheel is decorated in a style typical of the area of the Punjab around Bhera, today in northern Pakistan, which was renowned for both its wood-carving and for its lacquered woodwork. The spinning wheel would have been used to spin cotton yarn for weaving. Cotton was a staple crop in the area, and was used mostly for the beautiful and hard-wearing geometrically-patterned textiles called 'khes' which were made in several parts of the Punjab.
